Shadows (1993) for orchestra was written as a stand-alone work that could serve as an inner movement (along with Phantasmagoria) of a large-scale four-movement symphonic work. Each movement of this projected work utilizes the same pitch material but for different purposes. The piece can be heard on Navona Records (NV5871, http://www.navonarecords.com/catalog/nv5871/) as part of the compilation CD, Fire and Time, performed by the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, Róbert Stankovský, conductor. The orchestra for Shadows is a full-scale orchestra with a great emphasis on percussion and timbre although the final minutes of this work are written for string orchestra and celesta, a result of the great timbral clashes that mark the majority of the composition.
