Quartet for Oboe, Clarinet, Cello, and Piano (1993) was written as intricate chamber music for faculty performers, only one of whom (Keith Lemmons, clarinet) participated in the eventual premiere years later. Ironically, a sub-plot of writing this work was to get the performers, two pairs of whom rarely worked together, to collaborate in working out this music. This serial composition involves constant separation of linear and horizontal spaces in which the four voices move both independently and simultaneously to project the composite soundscape.
