eveningspun/black (1972) for solo piano was written at the time of the Watergate hearings. The piano technique is heavily influenced by the artist and pianist Cecil Taylor, who was in residence at Antioch College at the time Steven Block was an undergraduate. In the same way Taylor distributes pitch-class cells and motives to his performers, eveningspun/black is based on a small number of such motives within landscapes that vary from high-density cascades of pitches to low-density plucked strings. Listen below to a portion of the composition.
